Body therapy or bodywork can mean massage, somatic therapy, acupressure, shiatsu, Tui Na, Rosen Method Bodywork and any kind of energy healing including Reiki – if it uses touch or is hands-on.

Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress-related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress.

The difference between alternative medicine holistic therapy body work and massage is that clients remain clothed in their  session or treatment. Due to the clothing, lotions and creams are generally not incorporated. There may be some kneading, pressure and manipulation of tissue but that may not be the case as some modalities use predominantly light or gentle touch.

Bodywork is a tool for managing stress, which translates into:

  • Decreased anxiety.
  • More balanced energy.
  • Enhanced sleep quality.
  • Improved concentration.
  • Feelings of well-being and peace.
  • Greater confidence and optimism.

Bodywork like CCT, acupressure, shiatsu, Thai massage and Reiki can also help specifically address a number of health issues. Bodywork therapy can:

  • Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion.
  • Alleviate emotional factors that are a component of healing.
  • Bring the body into balance.
  • Ease medication dependence.
  • Ease grief, life transitions and highly emotional life changes.
  • Help release entrenched patterns.
  • Help athletes and performers of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts and performances.
  • Improve the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin.
  • Increase joint flexibility.
  • Balance the chakras.
  • Lessen depression and anxiety.
  • Enhance mental attitude.
  • Improve flow.
  • Reduce postsurgery healing time.
  • Reduce allergies and infections.
  • Help release tension and contracted, overused muscles.
  • Release endorphins—amino acids – feel good chemicals – that work as the body’s natural painkiller.
  • Relieve migraine and headache pain.
  • Help relieve fibromyalgia.
  • Bring nurturing comfort and greater feelings of well-being.

Sometimes traditional massage and bodywork bring up fears, anxieties, and grief and sorrow. Not all massage therapists or bodywork therapists are experienced in handling these kinds of emotions.

A bodywork therapist or body-centered energy practitioner who is trained to understand the mind – body – spirit connection can help you make sense of where the emotions are coming from.

The body is a storehouse of information and with the right guidance you can bring conscious awareness to patterned behaviors (e.g. chronically tight shoulders, torqued hips, tension headaches, allergies and certain stress-related illnesses). Each of these physical ailments has an emotional story to tell.

How many times have you been seen by a professional massage therapist, chiropractor, or medical doctor for a tight neck or severe headache only to have it return once you’re out the door?

A bodyworker who works in a holistic fashion (with acupressure, meditation, mindfulness, Rosen Method of Movement, stretching, and flower essences, for example) will help you to explore and possibly connect with the root cause.

A conscientious practitioner will refer you to other holistic professionals like yoga instructors, psychotherapists or your doctor for your greater well-being.

Body therapy or body work, as with any therapeutic treatment, involves a willingness to seek ongoing support if appropriate. It is an investment in one self, short term and long term.

If you’re a mother with young children and find it difficult to schedule time for yourself to relax and pursue any form of stress relief, I offer a wonderful solution: schedule a Reiki session with me and bring your child.

I love giving mothers Reiki with a two – three or four year old on the massage table with them. If you live in Bowling Green, Ohio, you might luck out and have me come to your home as I have an antigravity chair lounger perfect for in home sessions, though we can also work on sofas, beds or comfy chairs. In B.G. I work out of my family home. In Toledo, I offer Reiki in a professional office. All private sessions are by appointment only.

I also teach Usui Reiki and if you’re interested but would like to include your children, I can create a family Reiki class. It’s fun and relaxing and healing all in one. You and your family members learn basic hand positions, receive a manual, are passed Reiki through a ritual called an attunement, and explore energy and develop your intuition so you discover other ways to give Reiki. Children take to Reiki because they like to help Mom and Dad and siblings feel better. My own mother called me a sensitive “psychic” child when I was growing up. She didn’t know about Reiki. It would have helped me a great deal if she had.

Reiki classes are ongoing, so call to schedule any time.

I have worked with children who were suffering from anxiety and who were self-conscious and timid. Sometimes, if a child is open to it, I will give an in-person touch session. But for children who don’t know me, I can also use something I call my “fairy stones.” These are stones that have been treated or activated to Reiki. I also offer fairy reiki in several forms and teach fairy nature realms reiki for families or small groups of children. Fairy Reiki is a great choice for children.

I have seen a fearful young girl unable to present her speech to me begin giving it within a few seconds of holding a fairy reiki  stone. She made mistakes and she forgot portions of what she wanted to say, but she moved forward and actually began–and completed the entire presentation! Such experiences are a wonder to behold, which is why I believe in Reiki so much and want school children to be able to have this resource.

Hooked on Reiki? What?
Think about it.

Isn’t it better to be “hooked” on an energy balancing/meditation treatment than on drugs and alcohol?

A high school student began to have weekly sessions of Reiki with me. If I were a parent I could have been worried. I have talked to parents who don’t know much about Reiki and decide to learn about it when they see their son or daughter grow into more confident reassured individuals after several sessions or after a Reiki Level 1 class.

When a third grader asked his mother if he could have a Reiki play date every month, she could have been worried, but she had read about Reiki and realized it was helping her son. He no longer drank pop all day long and seemed less antsy and contented than before.

A parent might wonder, is Reiki addicting?

No. Most individuals come for one or two sessions or for several months on a weekly or monthly basis.

According to the HBO Addiction Project, “addiction is a chronic relapsing brain disease. Brain imaging shows that addiction severely alters brain areas critical to decision-making, learning and memory, and behavior control, which may help to explain the compulsive and destructive behaviors of addiction.”

Addiction has been considered physical and psychological dependence on psychoactive substances (for example alcohol, tobacco, and drugs) which cross the blood-brain barrier once ingested, temporarily altering the chemical makeup of the brain.

Addiction to drugs or alcohol is often a response to trauma or shock, peer pressure and to feelings that a person has difficulty with. S/he may feel a great sense of hopelessness, anger, frustration, fear, tension, or the pain of low self-esteem and shame. Alcoholism is also a disease that creates a dependency that is extremely difficult to break even with professional guidance.

Going for a Reiki session is first of all a way to come into balance, release stress and stressful thoughts, and usually come to a sense of well-being and peace. But it can be more.

Sometimes it leads to greater awareness of what underlies a way of being. That awareness can become a tool for positive change.

Sometimes Reiki becomes a spiritual practice and although I have heard that such practices can be addictive, they serve more to restore balance, bring peace, change attitudes, and resolve differences.

Reiki serves to make the world a better place. That’s a program I can get behind… Hooked on Reiki, Hooked on Fishing, Hooked on dancing. Yes.

__________________________________________

Do you have a distressed child? Do you have a teen who doesn’t want to go to school any longer?

I work with youth like these and I’d love to work with more of them. I am quite unusual in working with children. As a Reiki teacher, children’s writer, former children’s and young adult creative arts and dance teacher, and a CCT/Reiki bodywork therapist, I have the unique ability to come to the child’s level and see through his or her eyes, while having the insight and training of an adult. Together, we come up with unusual solutions.

We may find a wonderful stone that feels calming and calls to us. We may talk about energy and energy fields and discover how to set our energy field like the ancient Hawaiians so we feel more grounded and more at ease in our lives.

We may connect to our energy and discover that the Force is with us like JEDI Masters who don’t need lightsabers.

We may remember that we can text GOD, Super Pickle, or some wondrous protector at any time we need. We may find a new understandings about people and places.

When I was growing up, I had an invisible yellow cape that I put on that helped with fear. I discovered it through a play process that is meditation. I consider it a brainpower practice but in other traditions it might be called imagining, visualization, or a form of Hawaiian journeying or shamanism (a shaman being a wise woman/guide).

While I am with a child I may use an energy modality like Reiki to help calm the child and reach a place of balance in which we create a temporary resting place where the child feels safe. Sometimes the temporary “fix” becomes the solution. Often the child becomes empowered within so that s/he continues to create and resolve situations and challenges for him or herself. Once in awhile the child so enjoys the experience that s/he may ask to return for another session or sessions with me.

My prices are reasonable. And be assured that when a behavioral therapist or medical professional is needed, I advocate using their services. Reiki and all that I use in a session with a young person can be accommodated alongside any belief system, spiritual or non-religious, and any medical practice.

DM or e-mail me for more information and we can set up a time to Skype or talk by phone about you and your children.

Something’s moving and it just might be you… or someone of the younger sort who you care about–a lot.

sylph cloudReiki means universal life force energy. It is a way to bring a sense of magic into your life, something we might also call a renewed sense of wonder, of the great mystery that we can forget all too often these days.
READ HERE: A SKEPTIC WRITES ABOUT REIKI

Reiki is an ancient Oriental system of hands-on healing or healing touch that can be likened to being in a room with a sacred being or a loving Yoda who opens you to the divine so you benefit mentally, emotionally, spiritually, energetically and physically.

Many people prefer to see life force energy and include consciousness that is pure spirit in their description of Reiki. These describers of Reiki see it as being of divine origin, and they see the drawing down of Reiki as a drawing down of divine light or divine love.

This ties in with the point of view of conventional spiritual healers, who see themselves as being channels for divine light. And because Reiki is not attached to or allied to any particular religious belief, it is a form of alternative prayer, meditation in relationship, or sacred ritual that can be brought into any home or workplace setting, and can be accepted by all people whether they have no religious beliefs or a very strongly held one.

Another way to define Reiki is to call it spiritual chi. And yes, chi is found in Tai Chi, Chi Qong, and in Aikido (ki being a different spelling). In yoga, chi or ki is known as prana.

You are everything -
if you are healing yourself you heal everything.

The founder of Reiki in Japan, Sensei Mikao Usui saw Reiki as a path to enlightenment or spiritual growth, with healing others as a part of what you did along that path.

In the West, we have been presented with Reiki basically as a treatment or healing technique. This is because one of Mikao Usui’s students was a man called Dr. Hayashi, a retired surgeon commander from the Imperial Navy, and a Christian. Dr Hayashi wasn’t so interested in the ‘spiritual path’ side of Reiki, and he concentrated on Reiki as a healing treatment. Hayashi taught a woman known as Mrs. Takata, and Mrs. Takata brought Reiki to the West.

What is it like to give and receive Reiki?

A Reiki treatment can vary a great deal from one person to another in terms of what they feel when they’re having a session. Most people receiving Reiki enjoy (1) deep relaxation (2) feel heat from the practitioner’s hands, and 3) may see colors.

financial ease

Reiki treatments make you relaxed: deeply, deeply relaxed. Most people who receive Reiki end up drifting in and out of consciousness. Some people – particularly men – seem to fall asleep.

It’s common for people to feel heat from the practitioner’s hands, sometimes intense heat, a heat so unusual that it’s simply not possible for hands to get that hot on their own.

A common experience is to see colors against your closed eyelids as you are being treated. Sometimes a random rainbow light show, sometimes colors that change depending on what hand-position is being used. For some this is proof that something is happening and that there is some kind of energy occurrence. But feeling Reiki is the real proof.

I see this energy as incredibly personal and loving. It makes you realize
1) that you are not alone in the universe, and 2) that you are not just skin and bones. It is not something that the mind “knows” either. It is something you feel–like an invisible hand of support and comfort.

It's love no matter how you say it

It's love no matter how you say it

I have worked with children who were suffering from anxiety and who were self-conscious and timid. Sometimes, if a child is open to it, I will give an in-person touch session. But for children who don’t know me, I can also use something I call my “fairy stones.” These are stones that have been treated or activated to Reiki: fairy reiki is a great choice for children. I have seen a fearful young girl unable to present her speech to me begin giving it within a few seconds of holding a fairy stone. She made mistakes and she forgot portions of what she wanted to say, but she moved forward and actually began–and completed the entire presentation! Such experiences are a wonder to behold, which is why I believe in Reiki so much and want school children to be able to have this resource. I have also given sessions to moms and their young child at the same time.

What Can Reiki Do for You?

One thing that Reiki seems to do for most people, whether they’ve come for a series of treatments, or have learned Reiki for themselves, is to produce the following: Reiki helps them feel more calm, content, serene, positive, better able to cope, and not so affected by stressful people and stressful situations.

So people might come for a treatment with everything from depression to a migraine, and they go away feeling more calm and content, more positive, better able to cope, less stressed.

boys-readingThis effect is also something you would notice once you’ve been attuned or activated to the energy. Not necessarily a great big instant transformation, although sometimes it is, but usually something that builds up in you gradually, or perhaps it is something that you start to notice with hindsight. You realize you’re thinking and feeling about things differently, and are less stressed, less bothered by things.

My eighty-something mother, who has had memory loss and reacts quite easily to almost anything, now says, “I believe in Reiki.” And I no longer see her as the person who I fought with as a teenager. I see her as a human being who is calmed and strengthened by Reiki sessions and other treatments like flower essences and CCT.

face & hands picReiki clients remained clothed in a session and can receive the energy lying on a massage table, seated in a relaxing chair, or lying on a yoga mat. But, if you’re really stressed and can’t get away, I could even give you a brief session by phone. If it helps you, you may place your hands on the areas of most discomfort and feel what happens! I know I was startled the first time I received a Reiki attunement in what is called a “distance” attunement or session. But it works quite well.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT REIKI

1) You can attune or bless anything with Reiki: crystals, shawls, art images.

2) Animals love Reiki. I have seen my diabetic cat stabilize on insulin using Reiki on his food and brief sessions of CCT and Reiki, after a year of using Reiki, glipizide and homeopathic treatments.

3) Wriggling babies like Reiki, too. A simple touch is enough to allow the Reiki flow. In fact it can flow through any part of the body, so for example, a mother can hold the baby against her while she’s receiving a session and they both reap the benefits. How wonderful to coddle an infant’s feet this way!

4) Pregnant women will appreciate Reiki, and the unborn baby will benefit simultaneously.

5) Those people who unfortunately have life-threatening illnesses may not find a complete removal of their problem, but it will certainly bring peace into their lives and make the process of moving on far easier. And when someone has passed on, Reiki sessions can help loved ones cope with the process of grieving, seeing this stage of life in a new way.

6) Reiki Connectioncan be given to a situation, although I prefer to combine Reiki with Crystalline Consciousness Technique (CCT) when I’m asked to work with such things.

7) Regular Reiki sessions used in conjunction with orthodox medications will usually reduce or eliminate the necessary dosage and the side effects. But be sure to consult with a doctor before making any changes to medication.

A little Reiki is better than none, and the more the better as Reiki is cumulative. You can’t receive too much Reiki. There is never a situation in which Reiki is inappropriate or in any way harmful. The Reiki energy knows no limitation. So the only limit is your imagination, and your imagination can do wonders for you when it is given the honor of partnering with the loving energy of Reiki.

Mikao Usui had ‘precepts’ which he passed on to his students, and these are still used today in Reiki training. The precepts are:

Just for today do not anger,
Just for today do not worry,
Be humble,
Be honest in your dealings with people,
Be compassionate towards yourself and others

Reiki has the potential to make a wonderful difference to you and the people you care about, and can fill the spiritual void so many people feel nowadays, as Reiki helps bring things into balance on all levels. It can help you in times of transition and change, and when nothing else seems to bring solace, Reiki can offer hope and comfort much like Aloha, sharing energy in the present moment.

If anything written here feels right for you, if you like what you’re read, if you can see yourself or your children receiving or learning this simple and powerful energy technique, please feel free to contact me and we can explore together what might be the next step for you. You won’t regret it!

A Place For Us contributes the following edited information on this site because it is such an important directive for parents today:

“Listen well, parents of the ’90s [and beyond]. You, too, have an exceedingly important mission to fulfill… to ensure that your children remain intuitive and stay close to nature. Don’t push them to succeed at the expense of losing their soul purpose, for our purpose is our guiding force, and without direction… children will feel lost, alone, and afraid.

“So much better for… parents to focus… children’s attention on spiritual studies, as this is their true nourishment… ensuring their growth and survival. We angels are here to help you parent, and we won’t interfere or get in the way. Simply allow us to cast a new light on difficult situations, a task we complete with joy in our hearts, simply by your open invitation for us to heal. Do not ever feel that [the Divine] doesn’t hear your prayers, for S/He sends us to your side the instant you call.”

From Healing with the Angels by Doreen Virtue, Ph.D
Chapter: Angel Blessings for Your Family

Did you stop reading the above quote because you don’t believe in angels? Notice what you feel in your body right now–your reaction to the quote.

Just for a moment, place one hand on your heart and breathe deep and slow. Allow in the inspiration. Allow in spirit. Breathe in and notice how your body feels, how your feelings change. This is called, Openness and Receiving. It is a gift we all have.

Now simply state silently or out loud, “Show me what an angel is for me today, here and now, for the language above does not resonate with me and I would like to understand.”

Are you too busy to go for a massage because you have to undress and then worry about messy oils in your hair? Too much hassle?

We have solutions for you:

I intend serenity, stillpoint, ease, openness, and flow or something similar that comes to you from your heart and intuitive sense

  • Follow one of the links  on this site and enjoy a variety of relaxing forms from art and music to Reiki, sound healing and meditation
  • Set up a lunch hour session of energy realignment from a CCT/Reiki practitioner and breeze in and out without having to undress, re-dress, or worry about messy oils (in northwest Ohio, click here)
  • Look at your life differently. Perhaps this will help you: Author G.K. Chesterton once said, “In everything that yields gracefully, there must be resistance. Bows are beautiful when they bend only because they seek to remain rigid. Rigidity that slightly yields is all the beauty of the earth. Everything seeks to grow straight, and happily nothing succeeds in so growing. Try to grow straight and life will bend you.”

Change is a given. We have cycles and seasons. We can resist these natural occurrences, but that will not stop them from occurring. Saying such things and even reading them, however, doesn’t always help us in the process of recognizing and letting go of resistance and being open to change.

Law of Attraction and Abraham say, “What we resist, persists.” Abraham and Esther and Jerry Hicks have all sorts of techniques and tools for changing our perceptions, point of view, and thoughts.

But sometimes all it takes to move past resistance is to take a different view and thus, a different path. Think of this old song… The Bonnie Banks O’ Loch Lomond or listen here

Some folks call it taking the path of least resistance… the road not taken. One teacher told me, “When it doesn’t feel good or if it feels really bad, make another choice. Go in a different direction–with your thoughts, your point of view, or literally.” But you can walk; you don’t have to run.

The first time I tried to meditate as a young person, I felt everything relax and followed this feeling of relaxing and letting go till I arrived at the top of my head. Suddenly, I had this thought that was something like, “if I let this piece go, I will die.” I abruptly jumped out of the relaxation place and stopped the whole process.

This experience scared me so much that I did not meditate again for a long time–knowingly. Unknowingly, I was meditating every day by creating art, and by a single-minded focus on writing–a story, book, article or blog–in which everything else fell away.

Later, as I studied movement meditation, I began to understand awareness and mindfulness. I learned about these as I read works by Krishnamurti, Eknath Eswaran, and others.

Today, I had an experience exactly like the one that scared me. However, it was different in one way. This time I was not scared. I had a different outlook. I was also older and have talked to a lot of people. When I was a child, I had no one that I felt I could talk to about what I was doing because no one I knew practiced meditation.

Today, I worked with a meditation to heal childhood anger from a book by Deepak Chopra. As I looked at how anger had played a part in my life, I came to the part of the meditation that suggested that I play back the video of my life until it went black. This was a time before there was fear, anger, worry… It was actually possible to go there. It would be a time when everything was bliss and when there were no boundaries between myself and my surroundings.

As I opened to the experience, I felt myself relaxing and letting go. I recognized the meditation attempt in my youth, and how I had once perceived it. What came next astounded me within the peacefulness I felt.

The experience of oneness with my surroundings simply meant I didn’t hold onto myself–anywhere–and I didn’t hold on to my perception of anything or anyone.

What that feels like is being your energy field, being the field.

Everything you see is there, surrounding you. However, you are not “attached” to it because you are not holding on to anything in you or anything that “appears” to be outside of you.

You are free and your surroundings are free, and in that openness, allowing and letting go, you are one. Harmony. One verse. Universe.

“Oh! ye’ll take the high road and
I’ll take the low road,”
and we’ll all get there together…
